The academic hospitals in Nijmegen and Utrecht have announced that they are starting an investigation into the possible efficacy of the vaccine against tuberculosis (BCG vaccination) to better protect healthcare workers against the corona virus. The purpose of the intended research is to gain more clarity on this. For more information, see the Radboud UMC website (only available in Dutch).
In the Netherlands, this vaccination is offered to newborns and children under 12 years of age from parents from areas where tuberculosis is still common. In the Netherlands, tuberculosis still regularly occurs in these population groups. This vaccination protects young children against the severe forms of tuberculosis.
According to the national guideline, the GGD only invites children from tuberculosis risk groups to this vaccination.
The effect of BCG vaccine on infection with Corona is currently being investigated in 2 universities. It will take some time for the results of the study to be known. Until then, we should not give the vaccination to other people.
For more information, please refer to the websites of GGD, KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, RIVM and Radboud UMC (only available in Dutch).
